The Disappearance of Elias Redding

Last seen: March 4, 1986

Overview

Elias Redding, a 9-year-old boy from Holbrook, Arizona, vanished without a trace during a family outing to Little Painted Desert County Park near Winslow. The area, known for its colorful badlands and sparse visitation, provided an expansive and eerie backdrop for the boy’s mysterious disappearance.

Elias had been visiting the park with his parents, younger sister, and two cousins. Around 2:30 PM, the children were playing a game of hide-and-seek near one of the more remote overlooks while the adults prepared a late lunch nearby.

The Incident

According to his cousins, Elias had darted behind a large rock formation and was never seen again. When he didn’t reappear after several minutes, his family began calling out and searching the area. Within half an hour, a frantic search began.

Coconino County authorities were contacted, and a full-scale operation was launched by evening. The rugged terrain and rapidly falling temperatures complicated the search. No signs of struggle, animal tracks, or clothing were found.

Search and Rumors

The official search lasted six days and involved helicopters, dogs, and more than 100 volunteers. Despite the scale of the effort, there were no confirmed sightings or physical clues.

In the years since, rumors have persisted. Some locals believe the area holds strange magnetic or geological anomalies. Others point to older Navajo legends about spirits in the painted hills that lure children away. Law enforcement has not commented on any supernatural theories.

Legacy

A memorial plaque was placed by the family near the overlook in 1990. Each year on March 4th, a small group of locals joins the Reddings for a moment of silence at the site. No trace of Elias has ever been found.
